Troy Spring State Park, about six miles north of Branford off U.S. 27, centers on Troy Spring, one of Florida’s 33 first-magnitude springs. It also preserves an unusual Civil War site beneath the water: the sunken Confederate sidewheel paddle steamer Madison, owned and captained by James Felix Tucker. He scuttled the vessel in September 1863 to prevent its capture by Union forces. The park is significant for uniting a major Florida freshwater spring with a tangible underwater connection to the state’s Civil War history.
