The St. Johnsbury volunteers who gave their lives in defense of the Union were honored for their service in the Civil War, with battles named including Fredricksburgh, Gettysburg, Winchester, Spotsylvania, Wilderness, Port Hudson, Williamsburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Lees Mills, and Cedar Creek. Dated 1867, the memorial records the fallen on its west, south, north, and east faces, including Lt. Col. Geo. E. Chamberlin, Capt. Edwin B. Frost, Capt. Edwin J. Morrill, Capt. Jos. W.D. Carpenter, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals, and many other soldiers from St. Johnsbury who died for the Union.
