George Floyd Square is a commemorative two-block stretch of Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis centered on the intersection where George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020, outside Cup Foods. After video of Floyd’s death spread, the site became a center of mourning, protest, and demands for racial justice, helping fuel one of the largest protest movements in the United States since the civil rights era. Mourners and activists turned the intersection into an occupied memorial space filled with public art, while debates over access, safety, and policing continued. The city later formally named the area and began planning a permanent memorial and redesigned corridor.
