George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, at East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis after police detained him outside Cup Foods over a reported counterfeit $20 bill. Handcuffed and pinned face down in the street, Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe as Derek Chauvin kept a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes while other officers helped restrain him and held back bystanders. Videos of the killing drew worldwide attention, and Floyd’s death was ruled a homicide. The case led to the firing and conviction of the officers and helped ignite a global protest movement against police brutality, racism, and failures of accountability.
