The Moyie River Canyon is crossed by a 1223-foot-long steel truss bridge built in 1964 at a height of 464 feet, replacing a 1923 bridge and 1¼ miles of narrow, winding highway; it is the second highest bridge in Idaho, surpassed only by the Perrine Memorial Bridge near Twin Falls. Below, the Moyie River flows south from Canada through the canyon toward its confluence with the Kootenai River about 1.5 miles downstream, with headwaters in British Columbia and a course to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Kootenai and Columbia Rivers. The canyon also contains the Moyie River Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by the City of Bonners Ferry, where the first concrete structures, a diversion dam and powerhouse, were built in 1921-22, the original dam was later razed, a new concrete dam was completed in 1949, and additional powerhouses were completed in 1941 and 1982. The spillway is 83 feet high, the drop from the top of the dam to the lower pool is 212 feet, and Moyie Falls upstream from the powerhouses is most visible when river flows bypass the project.
