Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland and forest area in northern Idaho, near Bonners Ferry and south of the Canada–United States border. Between the Selkirk Mountains and the Kootenai River, its 2,774 acres were set aside to preserve migration habitat for waterfowl. Wetlands, hardwood stands, and coniferous forest create diverse habitat for more than 300 vertebrate species. Wildlife found there includes moose, elk, beaver, river otter, bald eagle, northern harrier, red-tailed hawk, Great horned owl, thirteen bat species, and predators such as coyote, black bear, grizzly bear, and cinnamon bear. It remains an important habitat area in the Kootenai Valley.
