Mount Madison, in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range, rises 5,367 feet and is the chain’s northernmost major peak. Named for James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, it follows the range’s tradition of honoring presidents. Above treeline, the mountain is exposed to severe weather, with high winds, low temperatures, and a subarctic summit climate that can make hypothermia a danger even in summer. It is also a major hiking destination, with the Appalachian Trail passing just below the summit and Madison Spring Hut providing summer lodging nearby. A surveying error left nearby Mount Monroe, named for the fifth president, actually 22 feet taller.
