In Trumbull's Long Hill section, Old Mine Park preserves a historic mining landscape worked from 1828 to 1920 and again from 1942 to 1946, though its mineral history reaches back at least to a 1757 lease for ore extraction. Around 1818, Ephraim Lane brought local rock samples to Yale professor Benjamin Silliman, whose identifications led to the Hubbard Tungsten Mine. The site became especially notable for tungsten, including an 1837 discovery described as the first and then only prismatic barite ore of tungsten in the United States. Also mined for several other minerals and metals, the area later became a municipal park and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
