Woodford Cefis Stephens was born in Powell County near Stanton on Sept. 1, 1913, and rose to become one of the most talked about, most honored, and winningest race horse trainers in thoroughbred history. Voted into the Hall of Fame in 1976, he trained six Eclipse Award winners from 1979 to 1984, became the only trainer to win five consecutive Belmont Stakes from 1982 to 1986, won two Kentucky Derbies from 1974 to 1984, won five Kentucky Oaks in 1959, 1960, 1963, 1978, and 1981, and won the Preakness in 1952.
