Mount Gosford, in southern Quebec on the Maine border within Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn, is part of the White Mountains in the Appalachian chain and ranks among Quebec’s highest peaks, including fourth in the province’s south. Named for Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford, governor general of British North America from 1835 to 1837, it is made of Precambrian gneiss and granulite, among the region’s oldest rock. Its upper slopes have gained increasing protection for their ecological importance, including habitat for Bicknell’s thrush and rare mountain woodsorrels, making the mountain significant both for its height and its unusually valuable protected landscape.
