During the War of 1812, a fort on this site was erected by public subscription to protect against British warships, but it was captured in a sneak attack and dismantled by the frigate Nymphe. With ammunition gone and all nine seafencibles taken prisoner, the townsmen hurled rocks, using their stockings as slings.
