Straitsmouth Island Light, off Rockport, Massachusetts, has guided mariners since 1835. The current white cylindrical tower, built in 1896 to replace the original lighthouse, remains active, with its light standing 46 feet above mean high water. The station was automated in 1967 as part of the wider move away from resident lightkeepers, yet it has continued operating. The island also carries a later cultural history through longtime owners William Francis Gibbs, a naval architect, and Vera Cravath Gibbs, a New York socialite and supporter of opera. After their deaths in the 1960s, the island passed to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and the lighthouse entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
