Halibut Point State Park on Cape Ann in Rockport, Massachusetts, preserves a rugged granite coast centered on the former Babson Farm quarry, together with the adjoining reservation and nearby public Sea Rocks. The granite here is about 440 million years old, and quarrying begun by 1840 helped shape Cape Ann until the local industry collapsed in 1929. Conservation gradually replaced industry, with protected land added in 1934 and 1981. Today the water-filled quarry, sparse wind-shaped vegetation, tide pools, winter seabirds, and a World War II fire control tower with a quarrying museum reflect the site’s geologic, industrial, military, and natural history.
