Pioneers of Oklahoma are honored through figures representing the state's frontier settlers and later generations of achievement. The farmer, "Boomer" Sooner symbolizes the spirit of the pioneers who settled the frontier during the 1893 Land Run. The World War Two aviator is Lieutenant Colonel Leon Vance, a Medal of Honor recipient, Enid native, and graduate of Enid Army Airfield. The astronaut is Colonel Eileen M. Collins, a graduate of Vance AFB and the first woman to command the Space Shuttle.
