James Duncan founded the City of Massillon on December 7, 1826. On this site once stood a grist mill and foundry owned and operated by Duncan. In 1908, a city hall was erected here and served the community for 68 years. In 1976 it was razed to make way for Duncan Plaza, which was built with contributions from Massillon businesses, industries, organizations, and citizens.
