Rock Cut State Park in Loves Park, Illinois, spans 3,254 acres around Pierce Lake and Olson Lake, combining woodland, prairie, and water recreation. Its land was first occupied by Native peoples including the Mascouten and later the Winnebago before passing to the United States after the Black Hawk War and being settled by migrants from Scotland, New York, and New England, who founded Harlem. The park was proposed in 1955 and officially established on October 25, 1957. Today it offers year-round outdoor activity, extensive camping and trails, stocked fishing lakes, and one of the region’s largest remaining grassland and wildflower prairie areas with abundant wildlife.
