Pettit Memorial Chapel in Belvidere Cemetery, completed in 1907 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is the only funerary structure of his design built during his lifetime. Commissioned by Emma Glasner Pettit in memory of her husband, Dr. William Henry Pettit, it adapts Wright’s Prairie style to a cemetery setting with a T-shaped plan, broad eaves, stucco walls, wood trim, art glass windows, and a porch that sheltered mourners after funerals. Used for funerals until the 1920s, it later deteriorated, was restored beginning in 1977, rededicated in 1981, repaired again in 2003, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
