Thetford Center Covered Bridge in Thetford, Vermont, carries Tucker Hill Road over the Ompompanoosuc River and is distinguished as Vermont’s only known example of the Haupt patent truss system, an uncommon design that may also be rare in the northeastern United States. Its trusses adapt the multiple kingpost form with a laminated arch of heavy pegged planks for added strength. The bridge has a single-lane roadway, rests on stone abutments later capped in concrete with a central concrete pier, and was altered in 1963 so steel I-beams supported the deck. Its importance lies in preserving a rare truss type in American bridge engineering history.
