The Chapel of the Holy Cross, built in Sedona, Arizona, from 1954 to 1956 within Coconino National Forest, is a Roman Catholic chapel set directly into the red rock landscape. Inspired by Marguerite Brunswig Staude’s long-developed idea for a church organized around a monumental cross, it was created in honor of her parents after an earlier plan in Budapest failed during World War II. Designed by August K. Strotz with Richard Hein, the chapel was shaped to yield to its setting. Its 90-foot iron cross and concrete construction made it an architectural landmark later recognized with major design awards, state acclaim, and listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
