In the spring of 1845, land surveyor Barton Salisbury came upon rapids along the Milwaukee River that he believed would provide a good source of power. He built a log cabin that later became the site of the area's first public school. Later that year, with brothers Charles and Foster Buck, he constructed a sawmill at the rapids, and the settlement of Barton began.
