Miette Hot Springs in Jasper National Park, Alberta, developed from springs long known to Indigenous people and shown to fur traders in the 19th century into a tourist destination overlooking the Fiddle River Valley. A grand resort planned in the 1910s by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, with architect Francis Rattenbury, failed because of World War I, the railway’s insolvency, and Charles Melville Hays’s death in the Titanic sinking. After modest early facilities, the federal government built the present road and pool complex as a Great Depression relief project begun in 1934 and finished in 1938. The site’s mineral-rich waters now feed hot and plunge pools.
