Hood Avenue honors General John Bell Hood, a U.S. Military Academy graduate of 1853 who served as a lieutenant general commanding the 2nd Corps of the Army of Tennessee, C.S.A., during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864. He succeeded General Joseph E. Johnston as commanding general of Confederate forces that were defeated in the Battle of Atlanta and whose troops fought a delaying action on the depot site during the retreat. He was born at Owingsville, Kentucky, on June 1, 1831, and died on August 30, 1879.
