On Oct. 12, 1864, Confederate troops and Union cavalry fought in the nearby mountain pass. The Confederate victory spared Habersham County from pillaging by Union troops and camp followers and preserved grain fields for Confederate troops. A Confederate drill field stood near the battle site. Some historians have called it the “Battle of Currahee” because it was fought in sight of Currahee Mountain. Casualties were small, and neighbors cared for the wounded.
