The first major commercial brick-works in the county were located here: Woodland Fire Brick, founded in 1870, and Hope Fire Brick, founded in 1872. They were consolidated into Woodland Fire Brick Co. Ltd. in 1875. In 1884 the business was sold to Harbison & Walker Co. of Pittsburgh, which eventually had seven brickyards in Clearfield County; the one in Clearfield, operating from 1899 to 1983, was at one time the largest in the world.
