Near this site, Catholic missionaries erected houses of worship in the westernmost Seneca villages of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Chapel of La Conception was built in 1668 at Totiakton, near Rochester Junction, and St. Jean Chapel was erected in 1669 at Gandachiragou on the Lima Road. The resident missionaries were Fr. James Fremin, S. J., from 1668 to 1670; Fr. Julien Garnier, S. J., from 1669 to 1683; and Fr. Peter Raffiex, S. J., from 1672 to 1680. Notable visitors included Fr. Rene Galinee, S. S., in 1669; Le. Sieur de la Salle in 1669; Fr. James Bruyas, S. J., in 1673; Wentworth Greenhalg in 1677; and Fr. Louis Hennepin, Recollet, in 1679. After destruction by Denonville's Army in 1687, a new village was founded on nearby Spring Brook. The missionaries there were Fr. Julien Garnier, S. J., from 1701 to 1703; Fr. Vaillant de Gueslis, S. J., from 1702 to 1707; and Fr. James D. Heu, S. J., from 1707 to 1709. When political circumstances compelled the final withdrawal of French missionaries from this region, religious ministrations to the Christian Indians continued through contacts with Canadian missions, where many descendants of the Senecas still persevere in the faith brought to this locality by these men of God.
