Hammond Covered Bridge, built in 1842 by Asa Nourse, spans Otter Creek in Pittsford, Vermont, as a notable example of a New England Town lattice covered bridge. Its single span carries the distinctive enclosed roadway and wooden truss form associated with 19th-century bridge building. The bridge became locally famous in 1927 when floodwaters swept it 1.5 miles downstream without destroying it; still usable, it was returned to its original site on barrels, inspiring its reputation as the bridge that went on a voyage. Later bypassed and closed to vehicles, it has been state maintained since 1961 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
