In Proctor, Vermont, the Vermont Marble Museum preserved the history of the Vermont Marble Company and the marble industry that shaped the town for nearly 90 years before closing in 2024. Founded in 1880 by Redfield Proctor, the company grew into one of the world’s largest marble producers as rail connections opened access to quarries in Proctor, Rutland, West Rutland, and Danby. Their stone was used in major landmarks such as the United States Supreme Court Building, the USS Arizona Memorial, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Exhibits connected quarrying, carving, architecture, sculpture, and the company-town landscape that still defines much of Proctor.
