In Sedan, Kansas, a museum honors native son Emmett Kelly, the circus performer famous for his hobo clown character. It opened in 1967 and moved in 1980 into the historic Sedan Opera House, where it remains. A local story from its dedication reflects the town’s character: Kelly quietly told the mayor that the town had purchased the wrong house as his birthplace, and the mayor urged him not to tell anyone. Alongside local memorabilia and a few items related to Kelly, the museum is also known for holding about 1,500 commemorative Jim Beam bottles donated by a touring couple.
