Dunsinane Mountain is a 12,742-foot summit in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, in the Uncompahgre Wilderness on national forest land about 11 miles east of Ridgway and west of the Continental Divide. It is notable for strong local relief, with an east face that rises about 2,500 feet above the Middle Fork Cimarron River valley in roughly a mile, creating an abrupt profile. Runoff drains into tributaries of the Cimarron River. The mountain lies in an alpine subarctic climate with snowy winters, cool to warm summers, year-round precipitation, and frequent summer thunderstorms. Its name was officially adopted in 1966 and was chosen for its resemblance to Dunsinane, the castle linked to Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
