In 1957, Clarence and Vicki Monroe moved with their sons, Kyte and Greg, from Detroit's east side to a new home on Recreation Street, and although both boys enrolled in the Lake Shore school system, Kyte soon returned to Annunciation Catholic School, where he graduated in 1959 and was highly regarded as a three-sport athlete. A severe knee injury during football practice ended his athletic participation, but in the 1950s he found another calling through the St. Clair Shores Recreation Department's summer playground activities, assisting Lake Shore teacher and coach George Crellin and showing a remarkable gift for working with children. He became known for encouraging young people and, while still very young, managed recreation baseball teams that won city and metropolitan championships and later served as a District Supervisor of the SCS Summer Playground Program at age eighteen. A sophomore at Michigan State University studying education, he hoped to become a teacher and coach, but he died in an automobile accident on November 24, 1961, one day before his nineteenth birthday. On the site of old Washington Field, the playfield was rededicated in his honor on August 20, 1962, through the efforts of city residents and coaches Harry Lacey and Jim Williams, and it was later expanded into a broad community recreation complex.
