Golden Gate Railroad Museum
Science & Tech
The Golden Gate Railroad Museum in Sunol, California, is a non-profit institution devoted to preserving steam locomotives, passenger equipment, and local railroad history through restoration, interpretation, and special event use. It grew from the effort to save Southern Pacific locomotive 2472, which volunteers began restoring after its removal from the San Mateo County Fairgrounds in 1975. Based originally at Hunters Point Shipyard, the museum relocated much of its collection to Sunol after losing its lease in 2005, with help from other preservation groups. It later began moving to Schellville in 2020. Its history reflects volunteer-driven restoration and the rescue of significant railroad equipment.
