Arrastra Mountain Wilderness
Nature
Arrastra Mountain Wilderness is a protected area in Arizona centered on the Poachie Range, a mountain chain rising to nearly 5,000 feet. Established in 1990 under the Arizona Desert Wilderness Act and managed by the Bureau of Land Management’s Colorado River District, it is significant for its varied desert mountain scenery. Peoples Canyon contains a lush corridor of springs, deep connected pools, and stands of sycamores, willows, and cottonwoods. The southern edge features volcanic plugs and drainages carved into bright orange mudstone. The wilderness also includes stretches of the usually dry Big Sandy and Santa Maria Rivers and, west of the Big Sandy, the Artillery Mountains with prominent Artillery Peak.
