Guildhall, Vermont, the only town in the world so named, was chartered in 1761 and settled in 1764. Capt. Peter Powers discovered Guildhall Falls in 1754. The area was a frontier during the French and Indian War. Col. Ward Bailey built the first blockhouse. The first wing dam was built on the Connecticut River. Guildhall has been the seat of Essex County since 1802.
