Stark Covered Bridge spans the Upper Ammonoosuc River in Stark, New Hampshire, carrying a local road and standing among the state’s notable surviving covered bridges. Built either in 1857 or 1862 to replace an earlier floating bridge, it is a two-span Paddleford truss with granite abutments and a central pier. Flooding and structural strain repeatedly altered the bridge: after its granite pier and the bridge were washed away in either 1890 or 1895, the bridge was recovered, reset, and later modified again in 1946 and 1954. Despite concrete and steel reinforcements, it remains a working nineteenth-century bridge with distinctive decorative character.
