The Theodore Baird Residence in Amherst, Massachusetts, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1940 for Amherst College professor Theodore Baird, is the only Wright building in the state. Created as a Usonian house tailored to the Bairds’ daily life, it was overseen in construction by Wright’s protégé William Wesley Peters and uniquely used prefabricated materials assembled on site. Its design features brick, cypress wood, broad glass walls, a dramatic cantilevered roof over the carport, radiant floor heating, and distinctive fireplaces. With space for Baird’s mother and even the family dog, it remains a notable New England expression of Wright’s Usonian ideals.
