Amherst College’s natural history museum grew from collections assembled over nearly two centuries, especially through the efforts of faculty member and later president Edward Hitchcock, who expanded the holdings and helped secure their early homes. After several moves and consolidations, the museum has been housed since 2006 in the Beneski Earth Sciences Building and now holds about 200,000 objects, with more than 1,700 on display. Its most famous holdings include the Hitchcock Ichnological Cabinet, one of the world’s largest collections of dinosaur footprints, and “Noah’s Raven,” regarded as the first dinosaur fossil collected in North America. The museum remains both a public exhibition space and an active center for research and teaching.
