Engineer Mountain is a 12,968-foot peak in southwestern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, west of the Continental Divide in San Juan National Forest near Silverton and Coal Bank Pass. Prominent along the Highway 550 corridor, it is especially known for its visibility and is regarded as one of the most photographed peaks in the San Juans. Its dramatic form comes from a southwest face that rises about 3,800 feet above Cascade Creek in only about two miles. The mountain has an alpine subarctic climate with long snowy winters, cool to warm summers, year-round precipitation, and runoff that feeds tributaries of the Animas River.
