Bear Mountain is a peak in the southern Taconic Mountains in Salisbury, Connecticut, rising to about 2,316 feet and standing as the highest mountain located wholly within the state, though not Connecticut’s absolute highest point. In the 1940s, the United States Geological Survey determined that the state’s highest elevation, 2,380 feet, lies nearby on the southern slope of Mount Frissell in Massachusetts along the Connecticut–Massachusetts border. Bear Mountain’s summit is marked by a stone monument, and the Appalachian Trail crosses it on a generally north–south line, giving the mountain importance both for its geographic distinction and its place on a major eastern long-distance footpath.
