Arethusa Falls is a prominent waterfall in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, where the headwaters of Bemis Brook drop over a granite cliff on the western slope of Crawford Notch within Crawford Notch State Park. Reached by the 1.5-mile Arethusa Falls Trail from U.S. Route 302, it is widely regarded as the state’s tallest single-drop waterfall. Edward Tuckerman discovered the falls in 1875 and measured them at 176 feet, though the Appalachian Mountain Club now estimates the drop at 140 feet. Named for the Greek nymph Arethusa, the falls remain one of Crawford Notch’s best-known natural destinations.
