North Ocean Boulevard, State Road A1A through the Town of Gulf Stream, was designated a State Historic Scenic Highway in 1992 to preserve the last remaining Australian Pine canopy and the original character and beauty of Florida's 1920s A1A. In this area, A1A, one of the earliest and most scenic highways in Palm Beach County, officially opened in 1916. In the 1920s, Australian pines were planted on both sides of the road in South Florida up to the freeze line as a windbreak. Because they grew quickly, a canopy soon formed over A1A, adding greatly to the area's beauty, charm, and character. That canopy was later destroyed except for the portion remaining in Gulf Stream. Although Australian pines later became too prolific and less welcome in some places, the town protected the canopy and obtained authority from the state to restore it, a process that has gradually continued.
