Old School Square gives its name to the locally and nationally designated Old School Historic Districts and is also individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Delray Beach Schools. On its grounds, the adjacent Delray Beach Elementary School, built circa 1913, the Delray Beach Highschool, built circa 1925, and the Vintage Gymnasium, built circa 1926, were restored and rehabilitated in the 1980s to house the Cornell Art Museum, Crest Theatre, and the Fieldhouse. Located in the center of downtown Delray Beach, Old School Square was preserved through community efforts after the city purchased the property and rehabilitated the historic structures. This helped begin a renaissance for the city, reviving it economically and socially on the basis of Delray Beach's unique history and culture. Old School Square is known as the city's crown jewel of historic resources and continues to serve as a gathering space for cultural, social, art, and educational opportunities.
