Originally designed and built in 1892 by John A. Roebling's Sons Co., the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge allowed mill workers to cross the river from new housing in Topsham to the Cabot Mill in Brunswick. It later served generations of citizens of all ages traveling between Brunswick and Topsham, was improved by the Works Progress Administration in 1935-1936, and was rehabilitated in 2006 by Atlantic Mechanical Inc. under contract with Topsham and Brunswick using Federal Enhancement Grant monies.
