Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain served as a Major General of United States Volunteers, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallant conduct at the Battle of Gettysburg, was Governor of Maine from 1867 to 1871, and was president of Bowdoin College from 1871 to 1888.
