In Brunswick, Maine, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain’s longtime home reflects both his life and the layered history of the house itself. Built soon after 1824 and later owned by several families, it also briefly housed Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his first wife while he taught at Bowdoin College. Chamberlain bought the property in 1859 and, after the Civil War, extensively remodeled and enlarged it, creating much of its present character. The house remained closely associated with him until his death in 1914 and welcomed notable visitors. Since 1984 it has operated as a museum, preserving Chamberlain’s belongings and the building’s connections to Brunswick’s literary, political, and Civil War past.
