Grand Traverse Light stands at the tip of Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula, marking the Manitou Passage where Lake Michigan traffic turns toward Grand Traverse Bay. Authorized in 1850, the first lighthouse was built in 1852 but proved inadequate, so it was demolished in 1858 and replaced by the current structure. Part of the original foundation survives, and the first tower site was identified in 1999. Also known as Cat’s Head Point Light and Northport Light, the restored complex preserves both Great Lakes navigation history and the domestic life of lighthouse keepers, with exhibits, a restored foghorn, and recognition as a state and national historic site.
