Grand Traverse Bay Bottomland Preserve is a protected underwater area in northwestern Michigan encompassing all of Grand Traverse Bay, part of Lake Michigan, off Traverse City. Covering about 295 square miles, it includes bottomlands around Old Mission Peninsula and the shores along the East and West arms. Listed in June 2008 as Michigan’s twelfth underwater preserve, it protects the submerged landscape and historic remains on the lakebed, including shipwrecks connected to the region’s shipping history. One of these is the schooner Metropolis, which sank off Old Mission Peninsula in November 1886 while carrying lumber to Chicago and was surveyed in 2009.
