At Jameson Point, where Robert Jameson lived in a log cabin during the mid-1800's, Jameson once faced a British captain who landed there with 19 men to seize his oxen, hogs, butter, and guns, but Jameson's unyielding stream of scornful epithets led to his quick release after he was taken prisoner. In 1889, a syndicate of Rockland businessmen opened the Victorian styled Bay Point Hotel on the point, and in 1902 the fashionable resort was remodeled and renamed the Samoset. W.H. Glover, one of Maine's most prominent builders at the time, built the hotel as well as the Breakwater Light Keeper's house and many other of Rockland's finest buildings. The Samoset catered to wealthy summer visitors from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. who enjoyed swimming, sailing, golf, horseback riding, dancing, and fine dining.
