Nature
Fire Scale Mountain, rising 3,845 feet in North Carolina’s High Country near Deep Gap, stands within the Blue Ridge Parkway for most of its extent. The Eastern Continental Divide cuts across the mountain, sending water toward the South Fork New River through Gap Creek on one side and toward the Yadkin River through Stony Fork on the other. Its southeastern spur, Ivy Point Ridge, carries US 421 as the road climbs from the foothills into the mountains. Beside it, Deep Gap forms a natural pass that gave its name to both the nearby community and the junction of the Blue Ridge Parkway and US 421.
