The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a heritage narrow-gauge excursion line near Fish Camp, California, preserving part of the former Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company logging railroad near Yosemite’s southern entrance. Its origins trace to 1874, when the California Lumber Company began building the grade that later supported a major Sierra Nevada logging network of about 140 miles of track and a 54-mile lumber flume. After logging ended in 1931, Rudy Stauffer revived part of the abandoned route in 1961 as a tourist railroad, which began public operations in 1966. Today it runs a 4-mile round trip through forested terrain, using historic Shay locomotives and interpreting the region’s logging past.
