For thousands of years, people have revered this Grove and its mighty trees. Ecological restoration is intended to protect the health and resilience of these giant sequoias, preserve the wildlife that lives among them, and give visitors a more peaceful and intact ecosystem. Walking and driving near the base of giant sequoias damages their roots, compacts soils, and diverts water away from the trees, so pedestrian boardwalks will protect tree roots and restore the health of critical wetland areas. Relocating parking areas and other development will protect giant sequoia habitat and create a more tranquil experience, while threatened species such as spotted owls and Pacific fishers will benefit from a more intact ecosystem.
